Visitors

Pihang nui Waka organised something a bit different for assembly on Friday... A Chinese group came and showcased some of their culture. We had a lion dance, a fan dance and a Chinese folk song. Today was the day of the lantern festival, which falls 15 days after the Chinese lunar new year.

Mr Griffin welcomed them...

Tamariki enjoyed the show...

Thank you to Whaea for organising...

Mr Griffin received a gift...

Loopy lines and paint

Today tamariki had to draw some basic shapes or looping lines on a paper with a pencil. They were invited to paint however he or she likes.

The goal was not to create anything in particular, but to encourage tamariki to be inventive and use the parameters of the set-up as inspiration.

They concentrated very hard.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind - Maunga art

Room 5 learned about 'Begin with the End in Mind' in Te Reo as part of their morning routine.

They discussed where they want to be on our class maunga each day. We talked how we 'Begin with the End in Mind' to do this.

For our visual art, they created their own mini-maunga and put themselves where they want to end up.

Spaghetti - Marshmallow challenge

Tamariki had their first 'enrichment programme' today. The challenge was to build the tallest tower possible to support a marshmallow hanging from it on a string.

Although tamariki struggled (at first) with working together, they got better towards the end. They gave it a good go. Everyone got a marshmallow to eat at the end.

A Visit from Habit Man

The Kakano Waka tamariki had a visit from Habit Man in our assembly this afternoon!

Habit Man introduced the challenge of how “To be spotted using the habits, by the puppets, and how to get added to the scroll in order to earn their Habit Hero Cape.”

Mr Griffin will then let us know if there are any names on the scroll. Hero Capes will start to appear or disappear in classes.

Waka Paddles

We designed our waka paddles for our waka.

Maths

Today we read the story 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. Tamariki then sequenced the story in order from 1 - 4.

Tamariki then explore building with shapes. They created endless patterns in this entertaining and challenging game of geometric exploration, which enhances creative thinking, fine motor and reasoning skills.

Class Treaty & Class Waka

Yesterday we started working on our class treaty. Tamariki got their hands traced and decorated them, to sign our class treaty with simple class rules that all need to follow. Today, we finished our display.

We also created a display ‘He waka eke noa’ and learned how to pronounce this correctly. We will all row in the same direction...
